Gary Sanchez was born in Belen, New Mexico and raised in the Southwest. He took an interest in art at an early age. He took Best of Show honors in his first art show at the age of fifteen. Gary went to College on an art scholarship then decided to pursue a career in public service. After working several years for the government he decided in 1997 to follow his childhood dream of becoming an artist.
Gary has studied under several noted artists including: Ovanes Berberian, Arturo Chavez, Daniel Greene, Allan Flattmann, Kay Polk and Bob Rohm. In addition he took Life Drawing classes at the New York Student Art League.

Gary's work has appeared in television, magazines, newspapers and calendars and has received numerous awards and honors. In 1996 he won a Gold medal for one of his paintings and was nominated for the Grumbacher Hall of Fame. He also took Best of Show in the National Arts Program.

In addition to his career as one of the Southwest's finest artist, Gary teaches for the Bernalillo Public Schools at Algodones and Carroll Elementary Schools. He also teaches New Mexico History and Art History (Native American, Hispanic, and Northern New Mexico) through the world wide Elderhostel program in Santa Fe, NM, headquarted in Boston, MA.
